The Good Ole US of A

Right ,I spent 6 months living in the States and there are some obvious differences between New Zealand and America (or at least the part of America that I was in). Here are some of my observations (please dont anyone take offence at ANYTHING I say, this is merely MY opinion.) Please feel free to come to New Zealand and see for yourself if Im right or not.

The first and most important thing I noticed about this great country is.... the toilets dont flush anything like ours do.....very bizarre. American toilets seem to suck the water out..ours seem to push it. I dont know...its just one of those odd things.

Squirrels make cuter road kill than possums and hedgehogs.

Your light switches work in the opposite way to ours, gets me every time. Ours are down when they are on, and up when off.

Either Americans are lazy ...or they just like to take their cars with them everywhere, what is with all the drive throughs? There's drive through takeaways, chemists, banks, and you can even mail a letter from you vehicle. In NZ food and alcohol are the only 2 things important enough that you dont wanna leave your vehicle for.

American money is annoying too, all the notes are the same colour so us idiots not used to it have to look at the numbers to work out what is what (NZ'ers must be dumb, we have different colours for different amounts). While we are on money, you guys wanna give up on all the small change. The theory goes, if ya cant buy anything with it....why have it?. Time to lose the 1 cent piece. It may be an icon and maybe its nice to have everything priced at $1.99, but it just weighs down your pockets.

Im sure there's a song about this....but you have a lot of TV channels and nothing on. We may only have 3 free channels in NZ but the quality is better...I didnt like the Brady Bunch the first time around..Im not interested in watching re runs of it. Only channel worth anything is MTV.

Country music is NOT all that wonderful, believe me. Unless ya'll are really depressed.

I always thought i spoke English till I came here but apparently not. Americans seem to have a little trouble with my accent. To add insult to injury I have been referred to as an Australian and a Brit.. nuff said.

As far as takeaways goes its good to see some things are the same the world over. Mc Donalds, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, Subway.Yep that stuff sucks all over the world.

While on the subject of food, some things are a little different here and need to be clarified to avoid confusion:

Americans have biscuits we dont

Americans have cookies, we call them Biscuits (we sometimes call em cookies)

Americans have catsup we have tomato sauce, Americans have sweets we have lollies etc etc etc

Smoking still seems to be fairly much in favour here. Maybe thats something to do with the price of cigarettes (You dont get much change from $10 in NZ for a packet). In NZ you cant smoke practically anywhere anymore, theyre even trying to ban smoking in bars and pubs. The reason smokes are so dear? The Govt taxes them heaps but because ya cant smoke anywhere they arent selling as many...so they put the price up so that the poor suckers who really cant quit can keep producing the same amount of tax revenue for the govt.

And heres a thought.......Americans should try making money the old fashioned way by working instead of suing every man and his dog. Make lawyers an extinct breed.

LaPorte, Indiana

Heres some info about where I stayed in the USA. I lived in LaPorte, Indiana.

LaPorte is a funny little place, it seems to be quite an old town but somewhere along the line someone forgot to look after it. I have no idea what the local council does all day, but maintaining the roads is not high on their list.

There are some neat old houses, worthy of any horror movie and it must be a town full of sinners cos theres a heap of churches.

It snows all winter, in the 6 months I was there, it snowed 2 days after I arrived and was snowing the day I left...woohoo

Then in summer its as hot as buggery (I take Brian's word for that as I didnt do summer)

Below are some links to some worthwhile sites about LaPorte.
